The famous Simon Magus is ‘Simon the obedient’. Simon, ‘Shimô’, is one of the names given to God, to the Messiah. The Messiah, ‘Shimô’, is none other than Christ Jesus who had followers among the Dositheans (or Dosthanis). These followers were the first Gnostics. They recognised Christ Jesus as ‘Shimô’, as God.
In the ingenuous writings of Ireneus of Lyon, one of the first defenders of the Church of Rome, that story became the amazing story of Simon of Cyrene, who was substituted for Jesus Christ and crucified in his place!!!
